What is a transvaginal ultrasound scan?

A private transvaginal ultrasound (pelvic ultrasound) is a non-invasive procedure used to view the female reproductive organs. Pelvic ultrasounds are carried out either transvaginally, where a small probe is inserted into the vagina, or transabdominally, where a probe is pressed lightly against the skin of the abdomen.

What is a pelvic ultrasound looking for?

A pelvic ultrasound scan creates high quality images of the uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, vagina and endometrium, and is what's known as a diagnostic exam—meaning it can either diagnose or rule out various reproductive conditions. It can give you a clear picture of how many eggs you’ve got left, by giving you a definitive Antral Follicle Count. If you’re trying to decide if fertility treatments like egg freezing or IVF are right for you, a pelvic ultrasound is a crucial step in getting accurate clinical information you need to make an informed decision.

Endometrium

This is the lining of your uterus, or womb, that sheds each month during your period.

Uterus

Also known as the womb, this is a muscular pear-shaped organ located in your lower abdomen. Its inner lining sheds during your period and this is where a baby will grow and develop during a pregnancy

Ovaries

These are almond-sized glands that sit at the end of your Fallopian tubes within your pelvis. This is where your eggs develop and are stored and where the sex hormones oestrogen, testosterone and progesterone are produced.

Cervix

A narrow, donut shaped structure that sits at the top of your vagina that joins the bottom of your womb to the top of your vagina.

Vagina

The muscular canal that connects the vulva (the outer parts of your genitals) to the cervix (the bottom of your womb). Also known as the birth canal. Vulva. The external part of your genitals. This is what most people mistake for the vagina.

Got questions?

What can a pelvic ultrasound diagnose?

+
A pelvic ultrasound is an easy way to look inside your abdomen using sound waves. It helps to examine the uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, and vagina. An ultrasound can help diagnose conditions such as PCOS, provide more detailed information about your ovarian reserve, including giving you your Antral Follicle Count, and diagnose any structural problems. If you are considering egg freezing, IVF or IUI, it will also be able to tell you if these fertility treatments are clinically possible for you.

How long does it take to get a pelvic ultrasound?

+
Your scan should be completed within 30 minutes.

Is a pelvic ultrasound internal or external?

+
Our clinics offer transvaginal and transabdominal scans. During a transvaginal scan, a small probe is inserted into the vagina to view the reproductive organs. A transabdominal scan is an external scan, where a probe is pressed against the skin of the abdomen to view the reproductive organs. If you would like only a transabdominal scan, you can let our team know during the booking process.

Can I do my scan while on hormonal contraception?

+
To get the most accurate result we advise being off hormonal contraception for 3 months prior to your scan.

Do pelvic ultrasounds hurt?

+
Most people do not experience any pain during the procedure, however you may experience slight discomfort or pressure.

Are there any risks associated with pelvic ultrasound scans?

+
Ultrasounds are very safe procedures. They do not involve radiation and you will not require any anaesthesia. They can also safely be performed during menstruation and episodes of vaginal bleeding.

How much do pelvic ultrasound scans cost with other providers?

+
Pelvic ultrasounds can range from £150 to £250 depending on if the scan is conducted by a doctor or a trained sonographer. All pelvic ultrasound scans with Hertility are done by trained sonographers and each of our scans come with a detailed report written by a Gynaecologist, reviewing your blood work and scan images together.

Do I get pelvic ultrasound results straight away?

+
After your scan you will get access to the images within 24 hours, which will be sent over from the clinic. After this your doctor will review your scan images in line with your previous test results and issue a report within 7 days.

Do I need to take a Hormone and Fertility test before I can get a scan?

+
No, you do not need to have a test to complete a scan. However, if you are thinking of pursuing any fertility treatments it can be useful to have your blood work completed prior to the scan. If you have your blood work completed first, then your doctor can provide a review and recommendations based on both your lab results and scan images.

Do you need to have a full bladder for a pelvic ultrasound?

+
If you are having a transabdominal scan, where the probe is pressed lightly against your abdomen it is best to have a full bladder. Drink plenty of water before your appointment and try not to go to the toilet for at least an hour beforehand. If you would prefer a transabdominal scan let our bookings team (referrals@hertilityhealth.com) know so we can arrange with the clinic.

Is there an upper weight limit for performing or interpreting an ultrasound scan?

+
No, there is no upper weight limit that will prevent you from having an ultrasound scan. However, the image quality is negatively affected by an increased body mass index (BMI). This means that weight could contribute to difficulty securing clear images. The sonographers will always do their best to get clear results. If they are unable to obtain clear images due to an increased BMI, the report will include a recommendation for an alternative imaging method (such as CT or MRI).

Can you have a pelvic ultrasound on your period

+
Yes, in fact, we advise doing your scan between days 1 to 7 of your cycle. If you are still bleeding, that is completely fine! Our sonographers are all very familiar with doing scans during menstrual cycles.

Can you eat before a pelvic ultrasound?

+
Generally, no fasting is required before a pelvic ultrasound scan.

What do you wear to a pelvic ultrasound?

+
Wear anything you feel comfortable in. Generally loose fitting clothing is best if you are having a transabdominal scan, so that you can easily lift your shirt up. If you are having a transvaginal scan, you will need to remove your trousers, skirt and underwear.

Can I have a scan if I’m on Hormonal Contraception?

+
It depends.  If you are looking to have a scan to find your antral follicle count (AFC), which provides information on your ovarian reserve, then we recommend being off hormonal contraception for 3 months prior to your scan.  If an AFC is not important and you are looking to gain more information about your anatomy then you can have a scan while on hormonal contraception.
