Why have I been advised to have a pelvic ultrasound scan with AFC (Antral Follicle Count)?

You may be advised to have a pelvic ultrasound with AFC (Antral Follicle Count) if you've been actively trying to conceive for 6 months or more, you're planning fertility treatment, you have confirmed or suspected PMOS (formerly known as PCOS), or there's a discrepancy in your results (for example, a high FSH alongside an in-range or high AMH). AMH is made by your small, developing follicles and gives an indication of your ovarian reserve, while an AFC counts those small follicles directly on the scan. Used together, they give a more complete and reliable picture of your egg count than either measure alone. This is especially useful in PMOS, where a higher number of small follicles typically raises both AMH and the antral follicle count.
