Can I test while on hormonal contraception or HRT?

Yes, you can still take our hormone test while using hormonal contraception or HRT. Your Online Health Assessment will ask about your current contraception or HRT use so we can tailor your testing panel accordingly.

If you're on hormonal contraception or HRT, we can still measure key hormones like anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and free thyroxine (T4). These provide insights into your ovarian reserve and general hormone health. Depending on your health assessment responses, we may also test additional hormones such as testosterone and prolactin. However, because hormonal contraception influences ovulation, we do not measure LH, FSH, or oestradiol as these hormones are regulated by hormonal contraception.

Why test while on hormonal contraception?
There are several reasons to consider testing while on hormonal contraception : 

1. Early detection of diminished ovarian reserve
While AMH levels may be slightly lower due to hormonal contraception, a significantly low result can still indicate a potential issue with your ovarian reserve, allowing you to explore further options with our experts sooner rather than later.

If your AMH levels are within the expected range, this can offer reassurance about your ovarian reserve and fertility potential for the future. Understanding your ovarian reserve now can help you make informed decisions about when to start trying to conceive, whether egg freezing might be a good option, or if further testing is worth considering.

3. You may need to repeat testing after stopping birth control
If you’re looking for the most comprehensive reflection of your natural hormone levels, you may want to retest a few months after stopping hormonal contraception. However, this doesn’t mean testing now isn’t valuable—it can still provide useful insights into your fertility health and allow you to make informed future plans.
